When Old Becomes New (Again)

Yesterday, I was putting together a second CD that I was going to send to someone. As I was looking for tracks, I loaded my old 2nd generation iPod and I Yami’d the contents. I’ll be damned if I didn’t strike gold in a mine full of aural nuggets! These are songs that I realized I still had. I love, no, LOVE rediscovering old music that I already have. First, it takes me back to how I was feeling at that time, and secondly, it evokes a new feeling—one that reminds me that something as simple as listening to music can take you to places when you are stuck on an island without an effing burrito!

For instance, right now Soundgarden’s “Like Suicide” is playing on iTunes. The memory that comes to mind when I hear this song is of the time I met the guitar player, Kim Thayil in San Jose.  (Fuck, there I go name dropping again!) There was a killer acoustic version of the song in the SFW soundtrack and I asked him about it. He said that it was actually a demo that Chris Cornell recorded to take to the band for them to listen to. Crazy…

Here is a list of some of the bigger nuggets that wait patiently for me to unearth by pressing play..

  • Drown - Smashing Pumpkins
  • Three Evils (Embodied In Love And Shadow) - Coheed and Cambria
  • Air - Sparta
  • Police On My Back - The Clash
  • The Rat - Walkmen
  • Gangster Trippin’ - Fatboy Slim
  • Broken Drum - Beck
  • Skin Deep - The Stranglers
  • Speedway - Counting Crows (actually the whole “This Desert Life” CD
  • What’s My Scene - Hoodoo Gurus
  • A Town Called Malice - The Jam

Incidentally, ALL these songs made the CD although it has yet to be burned.
